    Understanding Gonorrhea
    img

With the rise in gonorrhea cases in the past few years, open communication about prevention, symptoms, and treatment becomes our strongest ally. Empowering ourselves with knowledge is key – understanding safe practices, recognizing symptoms, and seeking timely treatment all contribute to reducing the risk. So let's talk about gonorrhea!

    Types of Gonorrhea:

Gonorrhea is transmitted through infected fluids (vaginal secretions, semen) and is typical transmited through sexual contact. Oral, anal and vaginal sex are all methods that can transmit gonorrhea and you can have an infection in your vagina, penis, anus or throat. In rare occasions, fluid getting into the eyes during sexual activity can cause an infection.

    Symptoms:

Gonorrhea symptoms can vary depending on the individual and the location of the infection. However, some common symptoms include:

    1. Genital gonorrhea:
    • Pain or burning sensation during urination
    • Abnormal discharge from the penis or vagina
    • Swelling or tenderness in the genital area
    1. Rectal gonorrhea:
    • Discharge, itching, or bleeding from the rectum
    • Painful bowel movements
    • Soreness or discomfort in the anal area
    1. Throat gonorrhea:
    • Sore throat
    • Difficulty swallowing
    • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

    Prevention:

Preventing gonorrhea is crucial in reducing the spread of this infection. The most effective prevention methods include:

    1. Safe sexual practices:
    • Using condoms consistently and correctly during vaginal, anal, and oral sex
    • Regularly getting tested for STIs
    • Encouraging your partner to get tested before engaging in sexual activities together
    1. Vaccination:
    • There is currently no vaccine available for gonorrhea. However, staying up to date with other vaccines, such as the HPV vaccine, can help protect against other STIs.
    1. Communication:
    • Openly discussing sexual health and STIs with your partners can help you make informed decisions and reduce the risk of transmission.

Let's embrace open dialogue surrounding STIs, prioritize sexual health, and work together to create a culture where seeking information is encouraged and supported!
