Most people (assigned female at birth) who are between the ages of 18-54 are eligible for birth control through TBD Health. There are certain birth control methods that should not be used if you have certain medical conditions, which is why we collect a full medical history to make sure we guide you to the safest birth control options.
There are many different options for birth control. Let’s highlight a few key features of each:
Combination birth control pills
These contain both estrogen and progestin. Common names are Sprintec, Junel, and Yaz. These pills help with pregnancy prevention, but can also help with regulating periods and acne. While these pills are safe for most people, they should not be used if you have certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure (hypertension), liver disease, or blood clotting disorders.
Progestin-only birth control pills
This type of pill is safe for most people as it has the lowest risk for blood clots. It needs to be taken around the same time (within a 3-hour window) each day.
Vaginal Ring
The vaginal ring contains both estrogen and progestin. It is inserted into the vagina and settles around your cervix. You will leave the ring in place for 3 weeks and then take it out for one week to have your period. Most people find the ring to be very comfortable.
Birth Control Patch
The patch contains both estrogen and progestin. It is applied onto your skin (usually buttock, abdomen, upper back, or upper arm) and left in place for 7 days. You will apply a new patch each week for 3 weeks, and then leave it off for a week so you can have a period.
Birth control shot/injection (Depo SubQ Provera)
This is a progestin-only injection that you will administer to yourself every 12 weeks. The injection can go into the fatty portion of your lower belly or upper thigh. While this method is considered safe for short-term use, there is a risk of bone density loss. It should not be used for more than 2 years unless you are unable to use other birth control options.
Yes! People with high blood pressure are eligible to use progestin-only forms of birth control, as these are least likely to increase your blood pressure. These would include the progestin-only pill (“mini-pill”) or the Depo-SubQ Provera birth control injection.
Your prescription will be written for enough birth control to last you for close to 12 months.
Yes, you can use your insurance to help with the cost of your birth control. Keep in mind that pricing may vary based on insurance, pharmacy, etc.
We do not accept insurance for the medical consultation at this time, however we can provide a superbill to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. If you would like a copy of your superbill, please reach out to hello@tbd.health with the subject line “SUPERBILL” and we will be happy to provide that for you.
Most birth control prescriptions do not require prior authorization paperwork for insurance companies, however a few of the name-brand medications do (such as Slynd or Phexxi). At this time, we do not contract with insurance companies, and we are unable to provide prior authorization paperwork if needed.
Certain birth control pills are fairly affordable without insurance. We recommend using GoodRx or another prescription coupon app to help save money on your prescription.
The non-pill forms of birth control (injection, ring, patch) are typically more expensive than the pills.
